![]() TechStyle keeps costs down by doing everything in house, from designing the products, to shooting them, to filming commercials in their Los Angeles studios. Once this happened, Goldenberg says that 100,000 former members immediately re-joined. Of course, TechStyle reinstated the $39.95 monthly plan, where customers can choose a pair of shoes from their personal showroom or skip the month (customers are billed if they don’t do either within the first five days of the month, and can use that $39.95 fee “like a gift card,” Goldenberg explains). “They had a real challenge with managing their inventory – they bought too much or the wrong styles, which led to inventory obsolescence and styles that were consistently discounted.” According to Goldenberg, the problems they inherited with Shoedazzle went well beyond the disruptions to their subscription model. ![]() That platform took seven years and $85 million to develop, he says, and by migrating Shoedazzle they were able to improve their margins by 20 points, from 30% above gross to over 50%. The team that was left after the merger went through was so “passionate and loyal,” he says, and he credits them for using the TechStyle platform to turn the business around. ![]() Goldenberg says that he believed in Shoedazzle because of the passion it inspired in customers and employees alike. “They liked that they were different from a fashion and aesthetic standpoint.” “For Shoedazzle customers when we talked to them, their second choice place to shop was JustFab,” Goldenberg recalls. He doesn’t remember whether he approached Brian Lee about buying Shoedazzle or vice versa, but after making the acquisition, Goldenberg and Ressler decided to keep the two brands separate. “We were both willing to take market share from the offline guys, but we should have been less focused on competing with each other,” Goldenberg says. JustFab sold shoes and other accessories by subscription, too and also had the benefit of venture capital money. The pair launched JustFab in 2010, with its own celebrity backer and Creative Director, Kimora Lee Simmons. In 2013, when JustFab (which became a part of the TechStyle Fashion Group this past August) acquired the company for an undisclosed sum, Goldenberg and his founding partner Don Ressler had been competing with Shoedazzle for years. “We felt it could be a $100 million or $200 million dollar brand, but it had lost its way,” he says of his decision to buy it. Goldenberg, however, describes Shoedazzle in entirely different terms. Certainly, that’s how I had viewed it – as a once-faddish site walking in the fading footsteps of Carrie Bradshaw. ![]() “The brand is often thought of as a failed startup,” Shoedazzle’s publicist told me. Brian Lee came back on as CEO to stabilize the situation, but when he introduced a modified, less flexible subscription model, it didn’t compel shoppers to start buying things from Shoedazzle again. According to Adam Goldenberg, CEO of TechStyle and Shoedazzle’s parent company as of 2014, these changes alienated core customers and almost immediately, their shopping habits changed. As the site transitioned to a more traditional e-commerce store, it started carrying third-party brands. Although at the time, Business Insider reported that the move had paid off, with Shoedazzle’s membership spiking by 25%, there was trouble ahead. The company abandoned its original subscription model, where members paid $39.95 a month to select a pair of shoes from a personalized showroom. Bill Strauss took over for Brian Lee (the man behind Legalzoom and The Honest Company) as Shoedazzle’s CEO. “We’re going to be very, very happy together,” another intoned, gazing lovingly at a sky-high stiletto. “Some people collect boyfriends,” one actress said coyly in a commercial, standing in front of a closet filled with pair after pair of pumps, boots and sandals.

![]() So, even though I don’t expect, for example, network administrators to read the book, I’m sure they’ll benefit from it when the software architect realizes they are also interested in parts of the architecture-the book tells which parts and how to document them. One of the merits of the book is to lead the architect to cater to the interests of a wide group of stakeholders of the architecture, including people outside the development team. But the Documenting Software Architectures (DSA) book is enormously helpful to all software developers, because we (I’m myself a developer in industry) think, discuss, and implement pieces of software design all the time. Paulo Merson: The primary audience consists of software architects. InfoQ: Who is the target audience for this book? There is also a new example of a complete software architecture document, which we made available online in a wiki. We also revised the different templates for architecture documentation suggested in the book, and replaced all but a few of the examples used in the book. Get actionable advice for your engineering challenges. InfoQ: What new content has been added in the new edition compared to the first edition? In addition, we needed to update the book to use UML 2 and to show examples covering more recent technologies. In this process we identified several points to improve in the first edition, more than enough to prompt the authors to write the 2 nd edition. We have also helped several organizations to document and evaluate their architectures. We have taught this course to thousands of students. ![]() Paulo Merson: Based on the 1 st edition, published in 2002, we developed a 2-day course on Documenting Software Architectures. InfoQ: What was the main motivation for writing the 2nd edition of the book? InfoQ spoke with Paulo Merson, co-author of the book on software architecture documentation concept and how it can be used to model the architecture to help with the design and development of software applications. ![]() The discussion also includes reference guides for three architecture documentation languages: Unified Modeling Language (UML), Architecture Analysis and Design Language (AADL), and Systems Modeling Language (SySML). The book covers different architectural styles like service-oriented architectures (SOA), multi-tier architectures, and data models. The book Documenting Software Architectures: Views and Beyond, 2nd Edition covers the software architecture documentation and how to express an architecture so that the developers can develop and maintain a system from it. ![]() Discover the biggest story reveals in our breakdown. FAQ for Unity Asset Store How can I pay at Unity Asset Store? It's whether a species has developed this ability spontaneously. The issue isn't whether some behavior can be learned. But more importantly, it misses the point. So these researchers basically trained some pigeons to pass the mirror mark test. There was a study using pigeons, where researchers attempted to reduce MSR to a matter of conditioning, that is, they claimed that the ability to recognize oneself in a mirror could be learned. MALE STUDENT: Wow! Do any other birds have this ability? FEMALE PROFESSOR: Well, not that we know of. And they didn't scratch at it when there was no mirror around. But eventually, some of the birds, while looking in the mirror, kept scratching at the mark until they got rid of it. At first, the magpies all engage in the same social behaviors that other animals do—looking behind the mirror, etc. So they gave them the mirror mark test, placing yellow sticker on the birds.black throat feathers. And because corvids have these other cognitive skills, researchers wanted to see if they were also capable of mirror self-recognition. So let's talk about a study recently conducted with magpies. It's been suggested in fact that jays—corvids known for stealing each other's food, may hide their food precisely because they are projecting their own tendency to steal onto other jays. And what kinds of cognitive abilities are we talking about? Well, corvids and some mammals have the ability to plan for the future, to store food for instance, in places where they can find it later. Corvids include ravens, jays, crows and magpies among others. But recently, birds have been found to possess some of the same cognitive abilities! In particular, researchers have discovered these abilities in corvids, birds of the corvidae family. ![]() Now, it's been assumed that primates and some other mammals stood alone at the top of the hierarchy of cognitive evolution. For instance, elephants will touch the mark on their heads with their trunks. But some animals, after this period of exploration, exhibit behaviors that show they know they are looking at themselves. They may even exhibit aggressive behavior. Often they will look for this animal behind the mirror. Now, typically, when animals first see themselves in the mirror, they think they are seeing another animal. In the mirror mark test, researchers put a mark on the animal where the animal is unable to see it or smell it or feel it, like on the side of their head, without looking in the mirror. FEMALE STUDENT: Well, how does it work?I-I mean.how do researchers know if elephants or chimps recognize themselves? FEMALE PROFESSOR: Researchers give them a mirror mark test. And it's called mirror self-recognition, or MSR. But it's also been found in elephants and bottlenose dolphins, a bit of a surprise. Chimpanzees and other primates,—chimps, gorillas, orangutans.and of course, humans. ![]() Today we are going to talk about a particular cognitive ability some animals seem to have—the ability to recognize themselves in a mirror. FEMALE PROFESSOR: As you know, researchers have long been interested in discovering exactly how intelligent animals are. Male Student: Yeah, I guess the idea is not practical if it means you have to take a long walk when you’ve only got a little bit of time to kill.NARRATOR: Listen to part of a lecture in an animal behavior class. What people want is somewhere they can have a little fun in between classes, kick a ball around for 15 minutes or whatever, have some fun after lunch before their next class. I mean the gym is practically on the far edge of campus, right? It’s a long walk. ![]() Male Student: Maybe, but if there’s somewhere else people could play, I mean, that could help a little.įemale Student: But it’s not a good substitute. So what Peter suggested in his letter, it wouldn’t solve anything. ![]() People are in a hurry to get to class and don’t really always walk on the paved paths or sidewalks like they are supposed to. I guess it’s right in the middle of all the busiest classroom building.įemale Student: Right. So it’s not just those students he is talking about who are responsible. But the thing is, everybody crosses that lawn every day because it’s so centrally located. I’m not sure it would really accomplish anything.įemale Student: Yeah,I mean even if they ban those students, kick them off, I’m not sure how much it would help because, sure, those guys cause some of the damage. Male Student: What do you think of this letter?įemale Student: I don’t know if a rule like that would be that helpful. But then, perhaps his subtlest joke is how he makes all this “borrowed” material finally, irrevocably his. To complain that he borrows-from Hark, from Fukasaku, from De Palma, from Leone is to miss out on the possibilities of a moment, this moment-where everything just may be up for grabs and the concepts of ownership and authorship need to be revised, and just how fucking great this could be. Questioning the seeming lack of editorial on said violence? It’s there, look again (hint: a child’s glance at a killer over her mother’s dead body, a later echo in anime eyes witnessing even more horrifying carnage). It is this beyond itself that characterizes our present condition. To call him out for excessive violence is to forget that ours is a world of violent excess. As it is, 2003 is still not quite there yet.Ĭan it really be claimed that Kill Bill’s all-out assault on the boundary between high and low culture isn’t anything less than essential? Would it be too bold to state that it is this very threshold which the art of cinema needs to address to maintain its vitality into the 21st century? Quentin has made a film that absorbs world changes large and small: culture clash, file sharing, satellite dishes, DVD commentary, chat rooms, global commerce-indeed it could not have been made in a world that wasn’t so fully saturated by them. Had it been made in Jackie Brown’s place in 1997, it would have seemed alien-no one would have been ready. Jackie Brown is a great film, but Kill Bill: Volume 1 is the logical forward step (no, leap) from Pulp Fiction. And let’s not forget that he remembered to entertain beyond the limits of anything produced within the mainstream studio system in recent memory. Why descend for honest combat wielding rigor and analysis when the lofty perch is so damn comfortable? Either way, it’s almost as if no one could-no, wanted-to believe that he, the prodigal son, could return after so long, after so much, and show us exactly who we are, where we are, where we’re heading, and with such ghastly style and horrible grace. At worst, facile gimp-masked moralism was woken again from its slumber and trotted out to fuck Bill, and hard. A shot to the heart of early 21st-century film culture garnered Quentin, at best, a slew of “that’s nice’s” followed by patronizing pats on the head as everyone rushed off to see something else. That it came, almost unheralded, during the drought of a, yes, “bad year” for movies makes its essential importance stand out even more, and will forever mark 2003, if nothing else, as the year that it happened. Kill Bill: Volume 1, more than any film released in 2003 screams “now.” Its mere existence quickly eradicates questions of “good” and “bad” years for cinema-Tarantino’s gift would irrevocably change any year that it was released. “More,” and for this filmgoer, pretty damn close to enough. If Kill Bill’s genius is in delivering us our “now” it achieves it by bringing the “more”-images, sounds, scenes, styles, pop-culture references. Sooner or later the scale is going to tip in our favor. This hyper-capitalist landscape has us locked into cycles of desire and want spinning ever more quickly out of control and though it’s easy to complain that we can never be satiated amongst the flood of sameness we’re being offered, we shouldn’t ignore that we’re also starting to demand much more. It is in this milieu that Kill Bill firmly situates itself, virtually breathes it from every frame. The onset of digital has made earlier claims that never before has so much been so close and so bewildering and so exhilarating all at once seem like the naive words of children, and we’re far from the point of knowing how even the most unassuming of new possibilities could turn revolutionary. Digital projection systems that will eclipse our world of platters, splices, bulbs and sprockets offer promise for choices in the theaters that would make the change ‘em up ethos of classic repertory cinema seem staid.
